Lee Carsley's England boss struggles to restore faith

England interim manager Lee Carsley has urged his players to show a “reflex” in their UEFA Nations League clash with Finland at the Helsingin Olympiastadion on Sunday, following their shock 2-1 defeat at Wembley to Greece .

In the defeat to Greece, Carsley experimented with a new tactic of fielding six midfielders without a central striker. After Bayern Munich captain and striker Harry Kane was ruled out with an injury, with poor results. However, Kane could be fit to return for Finland.

Asked if he would change the formation by going back to the striker. Carsley said: “It’s important that we try to do things differently sometimes and I think I learned from the game. Of course we will try to adjust the formation and address the areas that are still weak.”

Meanwhile, in an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, Carsley defended his approach to the team and insisted that the criticism. He received from the defeat to Greece had not discouraged him from thinking about doing things differently in the future.

“We haven’t won a major since 1966, so to think we can keep doing that and at some point we’ll cross that line is a little naïve,” the 50-year-old said. “We’ve been close, we all know that, but we haven’t won it.”

“We have to have the freedom to try different things because I tried something and it didn’t work out. It doesn’t stop me from trying something again. If there’s something I think is good for the team and I want to do it differently, I’ll do it.”

Manchester City midfielder Jack Grealish, who scored against the Republic of Ireland on Carsley’s debut last month, is ready to return after missing the Greece game through injury, but Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka has withdrawn from the squad after sustaining a right leg injury and Liverpool ‘s Curtis Jones has withdrawn due to personal issues.

Meanwhile, after a poor performance against Greece, Carsley is ready to make changes in his fourth game since being appointed as caretaker manager, and insists he has not considered taking up the role permanently.

Carsley said ahead of the game: “The most important thing is the reaction. Of course you want to please the public because playing at international level is very inspiring. We know we can do better. You have to respect people’s opinions and it’s true. We didn’t perform as well as we should have and I expected a better reaction tonight.”

Asked if fans would see anything different in terms of tactics or team selection to ensure a better performance, Carsley said: “I expect you to see both. I don’t know if it will be as good as I hoped, but I will do what I think is best for the ทางเข้า ufabet https://ufabet999.app team. *I have been a professional footballer for a long time. I will use my experience and improve over the next two or three months.”
